April Devlog
This devlog is a little bit late since I've been really busy with things but here it is! finally here!
Furniture / world building
A lot of the past month has been spent putting some furniture around the map and working on world building. The map was already white boxed so a lot of this process mainly consisted of getting the correct assets, modifying them if needed, then replacing the white boxing on the map with the actual furniture.
Obviously everything is still very likely to change and still very early. The walls aren't even textured yet as I'm wanting to get a good sense of what the building interior is gonna look like to help me with selecting how I want the walls to look.
The textures being used are Synty Store assets which are used quite a lot in indie games. I plan with sticking to Synty Store assets or similar style assets as to not make it feel jank or out of place. I have also modified some of the assets as mentioned earlier to my liking so that they can fit the part more
Lighting + Fog
Lighting is a big part of every game, it can make or break a mood and helps define a certain atmosphere. Due to this I have been working a lot on the way lighting effects not just atmosphere but the way it changes how the player plays in different areas throughout the map.
The way lighting effects the environment around it is also a hugely important thing to get right. In the case of the one level currently being developed the lighting is often un-even and a bit all over the place. This is intentional, its a rundown / half abandoned factory, Although it may still be in use by group its certainly not clear of any damages or wear and tear.
In the photo above you can see a room from the factory, you can see how the fog is more noticeable in this room along with a light being half knocked down. In game this light will flicker. The spotlight and boxes provide ambience through shadows being casted across the room and through the fog.
Wrap up
That wraps up most of what's been going on in terms of development for April! The month was pretty slow towards the end due to various reasons but I think getting the furniture and asset gathering well underway is a major part of getting this game to completion and hopefully this month can be a lot quicker!
There was also a fair few behind the scenes improvements when it came to networking, animations, handling the weapons, etc etc but those are all things that just improve the user experience and wouldn't make a very exciting dev log
As always, feedback, idea, and suggestions is always welcome in the comments to this dev log along with your thoughts on what's been shown off
